Your documents
- Passport and the Ausweis für Vertriebene (blue card).
- Meldezettel from your current address.
- Proof of income: payslips, an employment contract, or a letter about benefits.
- If you don't have a long income history: a guarantor (Bürge) or a deposit paid up front can help landlords say yes.
What landlords want to read
Write briefly and in German, even if simple: who moves in, your job or course, since when you have been in Vienna, and that you can pay the rent and deposit. Mention documents you can send. FlatDrop writes such a message for you in German and shows you the translation in Ukrainian or Russian.
Money: rent, deposit, allowance
Count in gross rent (including running costs), plus a deposit of usually up to three monthly rents and possibly a commission if you hired an agent yourself. Whether you can receive Wohnbeihilfe or other support depends on your status and income; Grundversorgung rules also matter if you receive it. Ask the official counselling services listed below.
Avoid scams
- Never pay a deposit, 'reservation' or fee before a viewing and a signed contract.
- Don't send passport copies to people you haven't met.
- Be careful with 'owner abroad, keys by post' and with payments through Airbnb, Booking or escrow sites.
- Prices far below the district median usually have a reason. FlatDrop shows the comparison for every flat.
