When

Within three days of moving in. When you move out, you deregister within three days as well (you can usually do both at once when you move within Austria).

What you need

  • The registration form (Meldezettel), filled in and signed by you and by the accommodation provider (usually the landlord or main tenant).
  • A passport or ID card; for non-EU citizens also documents on the residence status if available.
  • For people from Ukraine: the passport or the Ausweis für Vertriebene.

Where and how much

In Vienna at any Meldeservice in a municipal district office (Magistratisches Bezirksamt), independent of where you live. Registration is free. You get the Meldebestätigung straight away.

With an ID Austria you can also register online.

Main and secondary residence

You can have only one main residence (Hauptwohnsitz): where you mainly live. Some benefits, the Wohn-Ticket and voting depend on it, so register the right one.
