Wohnbeihilfe and Wohn-Ticket in Vienna: who gets support

Two things help with the cost of living in Vienna: the Wohnbeihilfe (a monthly housing allowance) and the Wohn-Ticket (access to municipal and subsidised flats). Here is the overview.

Updated 26 October 2026

Wiener Wohnbeihilfe

A monthly allowance towards the rent if your household income is low compared with your housing costs. It is paid for private, municipal and subsidised rentals. The amount depends on income, household size, flat size and rent.

You apply online or at the MA 50. You need your lease, rent receipts, income proof for everyone in the household and a Meldezettel. Eligibility also depends on residence status; check the official page for your case.

Wiener Wohn-Ticket

The Wohn-Ticket is the entry ticket to municipal flats (Gemeindebau) and many subsidised flats. Conditions include a minimum age, an income limit, a residence status that qualifies, and at least two years of uninterrupted main residence in Vienna.

Since 22 September 2026 there has been one Wohn-Ticket for council and subsidised flats, and applicants are ranked by bonus points. You register at meinwohnticket.wien and Wohnberatung Wien checks your details. Ads that require a Wohn-Ticket are flagged in FlatDrop, so you don't waste a viewing.

Questions

Who can get the Wiener Wohnbeihilfe?

Households whose income is low relative to the rent, with a residence status that qualifies. The exact limits change; the official calculator on wien.gv.at gives an estimate.

How long is the waiting time for a Gemeindewohnung?

Since September 2026 there is no fixed waiting time: for each flat, whoever has the most bonus points comes first, for example for long residence in Vienna, overcrowding or a fixed term running out. A long active search earns points too.
